6/21/2012 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The 325th Fighter Wing historian, Ted Roberts, has been selected as a finalist for the Air Force Association's Gill Robb Wilson Award.
Gill Robb Wilson was an American pilot, minister, military advocate and writer.
The AFA presents this award for the most outstanding contribution in the field of arts and letters.
Roberts is one of very few deploying civilians at Tyndall. During his deployment to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan from September 2010 to February 2011, he excelled as the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing historian as a government civilian.
During those four months, he authored four 125-page classified contingency histories. In addition, he analyzed more than 150 offensive airstrikes, approximately 75 airdrops, more than 500 surveillance missions, and nearly 200 casualty evacuations.
He also developed an executive-level air mission reporting tool, which showcased sorties, hours, munitions used, combat airdrops, intelligence surveillance reconnaissance missions, and troops-in-contact supports from July 2009 to present.
"It's a heavy competition," said Roberts. "I'm going up against people who have done some really great things."
Among his many achievements, he won the 325th FW Civilian of the Year (Cat II) for 2010, Air Education and Training Command winner of the Excellence in Wing History Programs Award, and received an "Excellent" rating during the AETC Unit Compliance Inspection for History Program and Heritage projects.
"It's a real honor to have been nominated for this award," Roberts said. "I'm sure the competition at this level will be fierce, so if I win hopefully it's because I've given that little bit extra."
