"Live Green" program keeps Tyndall clean

6/29/2012 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Air Education and Training Command's annual "Live Green" program is in full swing on Tyndall.
"The program is four years old," said Wendy Popell, 325th Force Support Squadron Horizons Community Center director. "It started in the fall of 2008 and is ongoing for us as a core program."
"Live Green" is comprised of two main events. The first is a donation-based recycling drive.
"It includes collecting wire coat hangers and VHS tapes," Popell said. "The coat hangers are donated back to the dry cleaners and the VHS tapes are sent to Missouri to a recycling center."
The drop off point for wire hangers and VHS tapes is the Horizons front desk in building 1550, she added.
The Horizons Community Center is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The second event is beach clean-up.
"In September, we are honored to join with the base environmental flight to clean up Crooked Island, NCO and the marina beaches," said Popell. "This year we will be asking volunteers to come help us, Saturday, Sept. 15th, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m."
The typical response is about 150 people.
"We provide garbage bags, gloves and water," Popell said. "We encourage everyone to wear caps and lots of sunscreen. We welcome families with children and are pleased that the children are so very willing to give up their Saturday morning cartoons or video games to help the environment."
There will be some free giveaways to the first 25 people who volunteer for beach clean-up, she added.
Overall, the program is an opportunity for involvement.
"It is an educational experience for Team Tyndall members and families who participate as they make a positive change to our environment and make new friends," said Popell.
