Commander, 325th Fighter Wing
6/29/2012 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- As we look forward to our transition to Air Combat Command, our next upcoming challenge will be safely celebrating Independence Day. Please take a few extra minutes to plan and prepare appropriately for your time off, especially if you intend to travel over the long weekend. Whether you choose to take a road trip, or stay in the local area, be vigilant on the roads - the Florida panhandle is known worldwide as a vacation hot spot and is sure to be full of visitors and locals celebrating over the holiday. And don't forget that even when you have made all the right and responsible choices, those around you might not have done the same so be alert.
Concerning the hazards of drinking and driving, there simply isn't a more dangerous mix. If you're planning to drink, make sure you've first planned to have a designated driver. Always remember there are plenty of options for getting home safely - your supervisor, your First Sergeant, and Airman Against Drunk Driving (867-0220), are just a few options available to you. Do the right thing and don't take that chance of harming yourself or someone else.
Finally, let's not forget our deployed Airmen's families celebrating the holiday without their loved one. Any time apart can be a lonely time and far too often separation, especially during a holiday, can trigger the unexpected. We need to be aware of those around us celebrating the holiday alone and help each other. If you need to talk to someone or if you know someone who needs to talk, get to them. We are a nation of great heart and we serve it best when we are doing our best.
No matter your plans, I hope you have a great time with friends and family and I look forward to seeing all of you back safely after the holiday.
