7/24/2012 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Not everyone has a willingness or desire to serve in the military, but for Maj. Brady Poe, the new 325th Maintenance Operations Squadron commander, it had become a sibling tradition.
"I was born in Goshen, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati," said Major Poe. "My dad was a school teacher and my mom did odd jobs and retired working for Delta, which gave us very nice flying benefits. I also have three brothers."
His parents were never in the military, but all his brothers were.
"Two [brothers] are eight and a half years older than me and identical twins," Major Poe said. "One was Army and retired as a lieutenant colonel, and the other was Air Force and separated as a major after 14 years. My little brother is Army National Guard and border patrol."
The decision to join the military was easy, he said.
"Honestly, it was my old man back when I was 16," said Major Poe. "We took a little walk out to the back and he put his arm around me. He said 'get a great education. I want you to do everything you can, but I am not giving you any money. I am not giving you one red cent.' So, it made my choice pretty easy."
With his father's words in mind, he attended Ohio University and completed their Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He graduated with a degree in business.
After college graduation, he earned his Air Force commission and was assigned to Aviano, Italy, where he picked up a passion for traveling. Shortly into his Air Force career, Major Poe met his wife.
Together they enjoy exploring new adventures.
"I met Courtney when I was on TDY [temporary duty] in Vegas," he said. "We are avid travelers. We love going to Europe, Prague, anywhere in Italy, Barcelona, Ibiza, and Singapore. We even just did a little trip to Bali. Australia is great as well."
This is Major Poe's first tour to Tyndall. Prior to this assignment, he served as the operations officer at the 509th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.
"Coming out of Missouri, the location is nice," Major Poe said. "You don't have to drive 45 minutes to go to the closest place to eat."
This is also his first experience serving as a squadron commander. But, he is very confident in his new role.
"My job is to provide for Airmen ... whatever they need," said Major Poe. "It is their squadron, so it is my job to get them the equipment to do their jobs."
What he expects from his Airmen in exchange is simple.
"Show up on time, know your role and do your job," he said.
Major Poe said he is excited to be here and glad for the opportunity.
"I am happy to be in the fighter world and Raptor country," Major Poe said.
