With spring break just around the corner, the weather is beginning to warm up and tourists from around the country will soon make their journey to the Panama City beaches.

Spring break festivities on the beach may also attract military personnel from Tyndall and other neighboring bases. During this season, many individuals may find themselves in situations they are not familiar with.

Spring break poses some risks and dangers. Every year, spring break party-goers are arrested for drug possession, battery, sexual assaults, theft, driving while under the influence, underage drinking and public intoxication.

Alcohol consumption and drugs are the main cause for these crimes, as well as the major cause of drowning, drug overdoses, vehicle accidents, and falling accidents from hotel balconies. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 are most at risk.

"One of the most important things to do before taking part in any activities this spring is to have a plan and a Wingman," said Technical Sgt. Calvin Grade, 325th Fighter Wing safety office official.

The following are tips from Tyndall's safety office to help lead to a safe and enjoyable spring break season:
· Remember your Wingman, use the buddy system
· If you're under the age of 21, don't drink
· If you're over the age of 21, drink responsibly
· ALWAYS have a designated driver, take a cab or call Airmen Against Drunk Driving at (850) 867-0220
· Never leave your drink unattended; date rape drugs are colorless and tasteless
· Illegal narcotics are abundant, so if you come in contact with them, leave the area and report it to the proper authorities
· Be extremely careful when leaving a public area with someone you don't know
· Avoid swimming and other sports activities when under the influence of alcohol
· Avoid confrontation and violence, walk away and report problems to authorities
· Follow all traffic laws and be a safe driver

It is important to make safe, smart decisions. Have fun, but always keep an eye on your Wingman.
