Are you politically involved? Since this election year is an especially active one, members should be cautious in how they participate.

To be able to vote and express an opinion is an important right, one the military has defended since the country was founded. However, political activity by servicemembers does have limitations. Members are encouraged to participate in the political process, but they must do so as individuals, not as Air Force representatives. It's vital servicemembers not give the perception the military supports one political party or particular candidate over another. To do so would undermine command structure.

The new Department of Defense directive on political activity by military members was issued Feb. 19. Three significant changes from the previous version are of particular importance. First, members may not display a partisan political sign, poster, banner, or similar device so it is visible to the public at one's residence on a military installation, including privatized housing. Second, if a member writes a political letter to an editor of a publication and identifies themselves as being on active duty, the member must state that their views are theirs and not those of the DoD. Third, Reservists who are candidates are required to include a disclaimer and may not use photos of themselves in uniform as the "primary graphic representation" in campaign media.
