The holiday season is upon us. It is imperative we keep safety at the forefront of our thoughts as we involve ourselves in all the holiday preparations and activities.

If you're traveling, always let others know your departure and arrival times. Nowadays most people have cell phones, so ensure you don't leave it behind.

Also be aware of the gifts you will be buying for children. Purchase appropriate toys for the correct age, as some toys can be dangerous for younger children.

Be careful with toys that have sharp objects, strings, cords and small enough parts that can be swallowed.

When shopping for Christmas trees and decorations for your home, follow these tips to ensure safety:

· Do not buy a tree with needles falling off, as it is a sign of dryness and catches fire quicker.

· Leave the tree outside in a sturdy holder filled with water until ready to be decorated.

· Once the tree is inside, water regularly.

· Make sure you do not set up tree near a heat source.

· Do not overload electrical circuits with too many cords on a single outlet.

· Christmas lights and candles should always be turned off when not in use and when no one is home.

· Place older ornaments and decorations out the reach of children and pets, as they can contain lead paint.

· Read container labels on any product that may have the potential to cause health issues or injury.

One of the benefits of being in the Air Force is, knowing the downside of alcohol. Be responsible when drinking during the holidays, apply what you know, have a plan and be a good wingman.

Always remember to use risk management. Ask yourself, 'What is the worst thing that can happen to me if I do this?' If you adjust your actions to avoid the worst outcome, you've employed risk management on a simple and personal level.
