Don’t get burned, use fireworks safely

Fireworks are a main attraction during this holiday season. However, the joy of seeing fireworks illuminate the sky comes with apparent risks.

People often view fireworks as harmless, but even sparklers, hand-held fireworks that consumers typically allow small children to use, can reach temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 10,500 firework-related injuries were treated by emergency medical staff in U.S. hospitals in 2014.

It is important to note that fireworks, while fun, are still classified as explosives. There are many harsh realities that come with using fireworks, including injuries such as devastating burns, permanent scarring and loss of vision.

The National Fire Protection Association advises the public to attend firework displays, instead of using consumer fireworks.

Fireworks can also cause major property damage. Wooded areas, homes and vehicles have been known to catch on fire due to firework use. The NFPA reports that an estimated 15,600 fires were a result of firework use in 2013. A total of 1,400 of those fires were structure fires and 200 were vehicle fires.

Public firework displays are the safest way to view fireworks on Independence Day. Trained professionals conduct these displays and are established under controlled settings. After the finale of a firework display, fireworks found on the ground should not be picked up. Fireworks that may have initially failed to ignite could still be active, resulting in possible injury.

Tyndall Fire and Emergency Services wants Airmen and families to celebrate the holiday safely. However, the use or storage of fireworks on base is prohibited.
