The end of the school year is right around the corner, and the staff at the Tyndall Library is hard at work preparing for the Summer Reading Program. The program will occur every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., June 15 to July 20. This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere.”

Each week of the program, its attendees will explore a different facet of traveling with three stories, a special guest speaker and a game, challenge or craft. For example, traveling through time, space, the ocean, the world, the human body and traveling within the military. .

The kickoff party and grand finale will include even more exciting activities, tailored to two different age groups. For the younger children in the Read to Me Group, ranging from infants to around kindergarten, there will be lots of songs, action chants, rhymes and silly movements, all centered on our weekly themes.

The Independent Readers, children approximately in first to eighth grade, and Teen Readers will be divided into teams at sign-up. The teams will compete against each other throughout the course of the program. Points will be awarded for logging reading minutes, weekly attendance and the special challenges at the kickoff and finale.

The kickoff party will feature The Great Race, a team-based relay with six stations, where each runner must complete a challenge related to one of the weekly themes. The grand finale will pit the teams against each other to earn points in a fast-paced game show covering topics from all six weeks.

Emily Copeland, 325th FSS Library library technician and point of contact for the Summer Reading Program , encourages families to participate.

“The Summer Reading Program is essential in preventing summer slide for school-aged children, but even more importantly it is a fun way to foster a life-long love of reading and learning,” Copeland said. “Families are not the only group that can get involved. The success of Tyndall’s Summer Reading Program depends upon its volunteers, and we have a wide range of opportunities available, whether it’s reading to the kids, assisting with activities or helping behind the scenes as a decorator. Whatever your interests, please contact us and ask how you can make a difference in the life of a child.”

Readers can register beginning May 1 at https://tyndall.beanstack.org/reader365. Patrons with questions about the sign-up process or any facet of the Summer Reading Program are encouraged to contact the library at (850) 283-4287 or tafblibrary@gmail.com.
