An early 1940s disposal area located east of the Tyndall Visitors’ Center, began the process of being cleared out Aug. 8, 2018, and is projected to be finished by November 2018, with up to two years of additional monitoring.

To complete the project, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center must clear the area as well as excavate and characterize its contents in order for debris and impacted soil to be separated and properly disposed of at off-site waste facilities, said Joseph V. McLernan, AFCEC remedial project manager.

“Clearing the land is the only way to access and remove the landfill contents,” McLernan said. “Removing the contents and proper disposal is the only way to ensure elimination of exposure risk to open the area for beneficial reuse.”

Currently the area is open space, but after the remediation is completed and there are no further exposure risks, the space can be used in any way deemed necessary by the Air Force to accomplish the mission of air dominance, McLernan said.

McLernan said the main concerns during this project are public safety and eliminating any future risk at this site.

“The area will be fenced off with safety fencing, silt fencing, and access roads will be closed to all traffic not associated with the project,” McLernan said. “This will address immediate concerns associated with project execution.”

People in the surrounding area can expect there to be more traffic around the site. Roads around the site will be closed or controlled during remediation. Harding Street and Lincoln Drive will be closed, and Roosevelt Boulevard will be limited to construction traffic, McLernan said.
