The 325th Security Forces Squadron wants to ensure that all Airmen and civilians who reside and work on Tyndall AFB know the policies and procedures for firearms on base.

What to do after you have purchased a firearm from the Base Exchange:

If you live off base:

Upon receiving a firearm from the Base Exchange, an AAFES employee will notify the Base Defense Operations Center and provide the purchaser’s information prior to departing the exchange.

Once the purchaser departs the exchange they will immediately depart the installation stopping only to inform the entry controller at the gate of their departure.

If you live on base:

Upon receiving a firearm from the Base Exchange, an AAFES employee will notify the 325th Security Forces Armory and provide the purchaser’s information prior to departing the exchange.

Once the purchaser departs the exchange they will proceed to the 325th SFS Armory, in building 659, to store the firearm until it is properly registered to be stored at a residence on base.

Tyndall privately owned firearm (POF) guidelines:

Under no circumstances will a POF be carried on the person, other than the initial transport to the first on-base destination, and under no circumstances will the weapon enter any building or facility.

With the exception of federal, state or local law enforcement officers performing official business, firearms will not be routinely carried on a person on Tyndall.

State concealed firearm permits are not valid on Tyndall; however, active duty, reserve, Guard and Department of Defense civilians, assigned to Tyndall, may temporarily transport and store their POFs in their privately owned vehicle in accordance with federal law, DoD regulations and Florida state laws; having followed the procedures outlined below for obtaining unit commander approval and registering the POF. This policy allowing members to carry their POFs was intended to protect personnel as they commute to and from base for duty.

How to register your POF:

Firearms stored in privatized housing and FAM Camp must be registered with 325th SFS Pass and Registration in building 2580 within three days of arriving to Tyndall or purchasing the firearm(s).

Any type of firearms are prohibited in the dormitories or unaccompanied housing.

Firearms are not allowed in Temporary Living Facilities, billeting or lodging facilities and must be temporarily stored at the 325th SFS Armory, eastside of building 659.

Owners are required to register their firearms by completing an Air Force Form 1314, Firearms Registration.

Personnel living in the dormitories must register their firearms with 325th SFS Pass and Registration in building 2580, and store their firearms at the 325th SFS Armory, eastside of building 659.

The first copy of the signed AF Form 1314 will be given to the owner, the second copy to the owner’s first sergeant and the third copy will be given to 325th SFS Pass and Registration in building 2580.

Civilians other than civilian contractors, such as retirees, residing in privatized housing on Tyndall or utilizing FAM Camp, will be self-sponsoring and will register their firearms at 325th SFS Pass and Registration in building 2580.

An owner may permanently withdraw their firearms if they present the armorer with PCS/Discharge Orders or proof of residence in privatized or off-base housing. Firearms may also be permanently withdrawn with written authorization from an owner’s commander.

Storing your POF in housing and FAM Camp:

Personnel residing in privatized housing and FAM Camp will ensure all firearms stored are secured in an appropriately constructed, locked container or equipped with a tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other safety device.

Mechanical locks or other safety devices will be properly engaged to ensure the firearm is rendered inoperable by any unauthorized user.

Firearms stored in locking gun cabinets constructed with glass windows will have an additional level of security in place, such as trigger locks, wire mesh, etc., to prevent removal and use of the firearm if the glass is broken.

The keys and mechanical locks or safety devices must be closely controlled to prevent access by unauthorized users; this is to ensure children, any person under the age of 18, do not gain access to firearms without adult consent and supervision.

Transporting firearms on Tyndall:

In order for a POF to be stored in a vehicle, members must provide a memorandum to their commander which indicates that the member has read and understands the rules and regulations regarding the transportation and storage of a POF in a POV. Members may not transport and store their POFs until their commander has endorsed the memorandum and they have registered their POF via Air Force Form 1314.

Maintain the Air Force Form 1314 and authorization memo signed by the member’s Commander in the member’s POV. The member will also notify law enforcement personnel during any traffic stops or other official interactions, that they are carrying a POF and will provide Air Force Form 1314 and authorization memo to the officer.

Under no circumstances will a POF be carried on the person, other than the initial transport to the first on-base destination.

The member, upon arrival at their initial on-base destination, will secure the firearm in the vehicle and not remove the weapon from its storage place until after departing the installation. The vehicle must be locked at all times when unattended.

POFs will be secured in an appropriate weapons case or compartment. Members will secure and control the vehicle at all times. As used here, a “compartment” is a closed compartment, such as a glove box, center console, lock box, or case, which hides the firearm from view outside of the vehicle. Lockable and secured weapons boxes, safes and containers are highly recommended. However, these items are not required if the vehicle is properly locked and secured.

Members may not store a POF in their POV longer than 24 hours. For storage greater than 24 hours, the POF must be registered and placed in privatized housing or the 325th SFS Armory, eastside of building 659.

Fully automatic POFs will be stored in the armory or stored off of the installation. Members will not store automatic weapons in their POVs.
