TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Tyndall Air Force Base Military Personnel flight is back in business at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
Four months since Hurricane Michael devastated the Florida Panhandle, Tyndall has been rapidly returning to a state of normalcy.
In the days following the storm, the Air Force Personnel Center established Task Force Housing, Assistance, Relocation, and Posture (HARP), a 16-person team at Eglin Air Force Base to provide local support for Tyndall Airmen and their families. TF HARP was comprised of military assignment and civilian personnel specialists, Airman and Family Readiness experts, Exceptional Family Member Program professionals, Military Family Life Consultants and School Liaison Officers.
“The storm left the MPF uninhabitable and without the necessary resources for career development Airmen to do their job,” said Staff Sgt. Delana Johnson, 325th Force Support Squadron career development NCO in charge.
Eglin Air Force Base, TF HARP and AFPC were all instrumental in making sure service members and their families were taken care of, Johnson said.
“Task Force HARP stood down on Feb. 1, 2019, and assignment processing responsibility reverted to the 325th Force Support Squadron, as is normally the case,” said Lt. Col. Johnny McGonigal assigned to AFPC Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. “The assignment workload slowed to a level easily managed by the 325 FSS.”
With a crew of less than 10 permanent party Airmen and seven Airmen on temporary duty, the services offered by the MPF career development section is back to its pre-hurricane glory.
“We're open,” Johnson said. “We started to work retirements and separations, re-enlistments, and extensions. We stay busy. It's nothing we're not used to.
“We've even had a few assignments drop for inbound Airmen,” she added. “We're slowly getting back into the groove of Tyndall Air Force Base becoming fully operational again. Of course it will take time, but we're getting there.”
