Capt. Melissa Hull, Continental United States North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, First Air Force, Air Forces Northern Headquarters antiterrorism officer, earned the 2012 Team Tyndall Annual Company Grade Officer of the Year Award during a ceremony at the Annual Awards banquet Feb. 20.

The Simi Valley, Cali. native was named among 10 other nominees.

"I was very surprised by the outcome, especially after seeing the other nominees," said Captain Hull. "I definitely did not expect to be named the winner out of such a group of good officers."

Not only is Captain Hull the recipient of the Team Tyndall Award, but while she was deployed to Afghanistan, where she commanded 319 security forces members, she was awarded a Bronze Star for her acts of valor. Approximately $4 billion in combat assets were protected.

She also coordinated security forces members to 57 enemy engagements, denying enemy key terrain.

"I am truly honored to be the Team Tyndall CGO of the Year," said the captain. "I am very grateful to my supervisor and leadership for submitting me for this award. I have enjoyed working with such a great team of professionals at AFNORTH. I am especially thankful for the opportunity to have deployed to Afghanistan with an amazing group of security forces defenders."

Her supervisor, Mr. John Brooks, AFNORTH Headquarters chief of force protection, antiterrorism and security forces, expected her to receive the award.

"An award or accomplishment for Captain Hull is almost expected," said Mr. Brooks. "She really is a representation of what a great Airman and Air Force officer can be. She is right where she belongs: leading the way, always. She lives and breathes mission first, people always.

"To call her an asset would be an insult because she's so much more than an asset. She is the critical enabler that allows the U.S. Northern Command Air Force Component Force Protection mission and antiterrorism program management function to meet and exceed the commander's intent and expectations."
