Gulf Asphalt Contractors installed nearly two miles of reflective markers along the Beacon Beach Road to increase the safety of the Beacon Beach trail for joggers.

An-Kar Services, Inc. received the $22,000 contract for the project.

Team Tyndall members use the trail daily for personal fitness, physical fitness assessments and organized physical training.

"The road is only three feet away from the trail in that area, so it's now going to be a lot safer for our runners out there," said Lou South, 325th Force Support Squadron Fitness Center director. "If a driver looks away and gets too close to the side of the road, the marks are going to make a loud noise and alert them."

While there have not been any accidents reported, trail users voiced their concerns over the safety of trail, said Terry Mahoney, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron project manager.

According to civil engineer officials, the markers will provide an audible and visual warning, to alert drivers they are venturing too far to the side of the road and will extend from Archery Road to Fighter Drive.

"The project was done to raise the awareness of drivers in case of distractions," said Chad Callan, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron programs flight chief. "The path is fairly close to the road in some areas, so if someone is running in the morning or at night, when visibility is low, they will now have added safety."
