Tyndall to kick off 101 Critical Days of Summer Published May 23, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Christopher Reel 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The 325th Fighter Wing will kick off the 101 Critical Days of Summer on Safety Day May 27. The 101 Critical Days of Summer typically runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. "It exists to highlight that this period has historically been a time when off-duty mishaps increase due to increased outdoor activities," said Edward Best, 325th FW ground safety manager. "It's an easy formula; increased activity equals increased mishaps," he added. "We attempt to modify the formula to decrease mishaps by adding an increase in knowledge and building awareness." There are many opportunities to participate in a large array of recreational activities this summer in the Florida Panhandle. "It is important to inform supervisors and to receive appropriate safety briefs before participating in high-risk activities," said Best. "Some of these activities may include jet skiing, boating, kayaking, and parasailing." Tyndall safety officials remind individuals not to exceed personal limitations while swimming at the beach this summer. Paying attention to beach warning flags can be the difference between life and death. Warning flags indicate surf condition risks and threats of dangerous marine life. The summer season is often a time for family vacations. When planning vacations, officials say to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to reach your destination. If possible, avoid driving at night. While enjoying the summer months, do not allow alcohol consumption to influence decisions or actions, said Tyndall safety officials. Always plan ahead and have a designated driver or plan to get home safely. "If you are about to do an activity that gives you the remotest reason to pause, then ask yourself, 'If I do this, what is the worst thing that can happen to me?'" said Best. "Thinking before you act is one of the simplest and easiest forms of risk management you could do."
