Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport recently opened a military welcome center, available to all individuals with a valid military identification card.

The facility features 2,300 square feet of amenities to those who are military affiliated.

"We have televisions, Wi-Fi, computers, telephone chargers, snacks, soft drinks, a kid's play area with DVD player, and toiletries," said Mr. John Hooban, military welcome center coordinator. "It is important that military (members)  have a place to go so as not to be bothered. They can put their feet up and be normal."

There is also an abundance of information available at the center.

"The center has books, pamphlets, maps and information, regarding the city, that you may have for your personal use," said Senior Airman Keisha Walters, 325th Fighter Wing legal office paralegal. "They also add to the welcome center periodically depending on donations that they receive. The volunteers are really nice and personable, as they greet you when you walk in; all they ask is that you show a military ID."

All individuals working at the center are volunteers.

"I happened to go to the airport to pick up a judge for a court here at Tyndall," said Airman Walters. "I had on my dress blues and a volunteer came up to me to inform me of what they had to offer military members, veterans and their dependents. The people were very friendly and it's a very welcoming place; that's what you need when you are returning home or if you want to go to an area just to be by yourself or with your loved ones."

The facility is located, conveniently, before the security checkpoint.

"It's located near baggage claim and the rental car desks, up a flight of stairs," said Airman Walters. "So, that makes it accessible and noticeable, considering in most instances you have to go claim your baggage."

The welcome center is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"We are aware that a lot of individuals leave or return outside of the volunteer's hours," said Mr. Hooban. "If servicemembers need access to the center all they have to do is ask a security guard and they will unlock the doors."
