Practice safe driving during holiday season Published Nov. 22, 2010 By 2nd Lt. Melanie Holliday 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Media Realtions chief TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The 325th Fighter Wing Safety office is displaying wrecked cars at the Sabre and main gates as a reminder to be safe during the upcoming holiday season. "Around this time of year traveling safety is the last thing on everyone's mind," said Lt. Col. Jason Costello, 325th Fighter Wing Safety chief. "Visuals are key and we hope the cars will make individuals think 'that could happen to me'." Each car will be roped off and have signs posted with quick messages to enforce the message of practicing safe driving habits during the season. "It's important that we all take the proper measures in planning a safe holiday trip," said Master Sgt. Ivan Martinez, ground safety noncommissioned officer in charge. "Checking your car, using hand-free devices, and getting the proper amount of sleep are a few things we can do to not only make our holiday accident free but others in the community as well." As you begin to travel this holiday season there are a few tips you should remember to ensure a safe trip: * Sleep at least seven to nine hours the night before the trip * Stop every two hours and walk around * Be a defensive driver and watch for fatigued or drunk drivers * Schedule a routine maintenance check on your car before leaving (tire pressure, oil, battery, windshield wipers, etc.) * Pack emergency equipment including first aid kits, flashlights, water, and blankets * Be responsible and don't drink and drive or text and drive The vehicles were provided by Pick-n-Pull Self-Service Auto Parts Store in Panama City and will be displayed from Thanksgiving through the New Year.
