New Dads Published June 14, 2010 325th Medical Group TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Expecting a baby? Wondering what kind of dad you'll be? How hard can it be to take care of a newborn? Congratulations and Happy Father's Day! There are few things in life that are as exciting or frightening as becoming a father. Just ask any dad. If the baby has been in the planning stage for a while, you will be thrilled that you have started on the path to fatherhood. If this baby is a surprise, you may have reservations about being prepared. Both of these states have to be worked through. You may have thoughts like: How will we afford the baby? Can we get everything we need? How are we going to feed him? We're so young. We haven't been married long. Will she be alright? Will my partner be okay? What will our families say? First, take a deep breath. Second, get all of the information you can - but make sure it is good information from a reliable sourse.. The National Fatherhood Initiative offers great resources for new, old and expectant dads. There are several websites that offer detailed information on how to take care of your new baby. Tyndall offers the the New Parent Support Program classes for expectant parents and, specifically, expectant dads. These classes are very specific, how-to-care for your new baby and work with your partner to raise a healthy, happy child. So, how else can you help during the pregnancy? Being a good father begins with being there for the mother of your child. Take her to prenatal appointments Go to childbirth classes with her Get her ice cream and pickles at 2 a.m. Tie her shoes when she can no longer see her feet Tell her how beautiful she is Rub her back or feet when they hurt Hold her hand during contractions Do the grocery shopping and fix dinner Help with household chores Be there to witness the birth of your child Let her know how honored you are to be the father of her child. Yes, it's official (whether the baby is here or not). You are a father. Have a Happy Father's Day.
