· speak when spoken to...or else

What do kids need most in a dad? Can you name three things your father gave you? What three things would you want from a father?

Father's Day is not just a day to relax or receive presents. It is a day to reflect on how your children see you as a dad. If you want to be the best dad, look at the time you spend with your children. What activities do you do together? Read to your child. It is simple, relaxing, educational and it's free! Roll or toss a ball, sing, march around, act silly, all of which will form good memories. Tired, get angry or snap easily? Learn how to defuse that anger. Have realistic expectations. Make sure you don't bring your frustrations home from the office.

Ultimately, you make yourself the dad your children see. Is it easy? Not always. If you need help formulating your vision of fatherhood, see a professional at the New Parent Support Program at the Life Skills Support Clinic. Remember, you can be the dad YOU want to be. Now you can enjoy the burned breakfast and ugly tie. Happy Father's Day!
