A 325th Medical Support Squadron Airman shadowed the 325th Fighter Wing Commander May 11, as part of the Company Grade Officer Shadow program.

Captain Monica Gomez-Arenas, 325th MDSS medical information systems flight commander, began her day by attending the monthly NCO breakfast with Colonel James Browne, 325th FW commander.

"During my day, the Wing Commander met with NCOs for breakfast and also spoke to graduating students about the importance of being the best you can be with what you are given and setting the example at all times," said Captain Gomez-Arenas. "I also attended several meetings and was able to receive mentorship advice about leadership and how to balance work and other priorities."

Captain Gomez-Arenas took many valuable ideals from her time spent with the commander.

"Even though our Wing Commander has a hectic schedule, he makes time to provide mentorship at every opportunity," said Captain Gomez-Arenas. "This was a great experience for me, I was able to see how meetings are conducted at the highest level and I also had the opportunity to receive guidance."

Overall, she found the program to be a success.

"This program is essential because it provides the opportunity of a lifetime for CGOs," said Captain Gomez-Arenas. "I was able to gain a first-hand perspective of the Wing Commander's roles and responsibilities and a unique and valuable learning and mentoring experience which will serve as a reminder to always lead by example and to make time for mentorship. Additionally, the program gives insight into what it takes to serve such an important role which is vital for anyone aspiring to be a leader at that level or any other level."

For those Airmen who will one day undergo the same process, Captain Gomez-Arenas, had a little advice.

"They should take full advantage of the experience by listening and learning as much as they can during the day," said Captain Gomez-Arenas. "They should approach this opportunity ready and willing to absorb all of its benefits."

Her squadron, since the event, has implemented a similar program.

"If the Wing Commander has the time to spend with any of us, then we at any level of leadership can also make time to do this for our troops," said Captain Gomez-Arenas. "My Squadron Commander, Lt. Col. Shari Silverman has implemented a similar program in our unit and it has made a big difference in our squadron."

Captain Gomez-Arenas was nominated for the CGO shadow program for her dedication to the mission.

"I submitted Capt. Gomez for the CGO shadow program because of her phenomenal leadership skills," said Col. Silverman. "Capt Gomez is involved in all areas across the base and community. She is a fireball of energy and makes MDSS proud."
