Air Education and Training Command recently announced two Tyndall Airmen as award recipients.

Major Michael J. Patella, 325th Fighter Wing Judge Advocate, was named the Outstanding Reserve Judge Advocate of the Year and Tech. Sgt. Sylvetris Rufus, 325th FW Judge Advocate Paralegal and NCO in Charge of General Law, was named Outstanding Paralegal Airman of the Year.

"It is an honor to even be nominated for this award," said Major Patella. "I love the people I am able to work with in the office and around the base."

Major Patella spends his time between Tyndall Air Force Base, Eglin AFB, and Hurlburt Field.

"I have wanted to be a lawyer since I was a kid," said Major Patella. "It gives you an opportunity to do a lot of different things."

Sergeant Rufus shares a lot of the same views. She said her passion for law also started at a young age.

"I loved watching the television shows such as Law and Order," said Sergeant Rufus. "My sister has a degree in criminal justice and my cousin is graduating from law school this summer, so I guess you could also say it is a family shared interest."

On a day-to-day basis, Sergeant Rufus performs power of attorneys, wills, notaries, and much more. But, her favorite part is assisting in the preparation of legal reviews because she learns a lot and is able to work closely with the attorneys. "The more I am involved, the more I understand," said Sergeant Rufus.
Sergeant Rufus was unaware she was submitted for the award but, very excited about the results.

"I am very honored to win this award," said Sergeant Rufus. "I really did not expect it. I am grateful to my supervisors for their support and for submitting this package on my behalf."

Both winners will go on to compete at the Air Force-level.
