CGO shadows commander for a day

One day each month, a selected company grade officer shadows Col. James Browne, 325th Fighter Wing commander, for the entire day and gets to see firsthand what the commander's job entails and to witness the decisions and influences he makes on a regular basis.

This is made possible through the Commander's Shadow Program. The selected CGO is from a different group each month and the selectees must be recommended by their leadership. This program is designed to recognize personnel and provide an opportunity for the commander to meet with the Airmen and for a CGO to get a first-hand look at the job of a wing commander.

"This program offers the opportunity for a CGO to walk in my shoes and experience what I do on a day-to-day basis," said Colonel Browne. "This is a great program that allows me to have one-on-one time with a CGO and offer them the knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my career, as well as address their questions and concerns."

As part of the program, Colonel Browne was recently shadowed for the day for the first time since taking command by Capt. Seanna Less, 325th Maintenance Operations Squadron Operations Officer.

"I think this is a beneficial program," said Captain Less. "Especially for CGOs to see the commander's leadership, managerial responsibilities, the oversight he has of Tyndall and his dealings with base agencies."

Throughout the day Captain Less was able to attend all the commander's meetings and gain guidance directly from him. She said she learned a lot regarding his principals, focuses, responsibilities and goals; and in turn was able to gain mentorship on prioritizing tasks, establishing and setting goals and leadership.

Captain Less was nominated for the program by her supervisor, Maj. Richard Flamand, 325th MOS Commander, for being motivated and dedicated to learning as much as possible and ensuring that she excels not only as a maintenance officer, but also as an Airman. Her job responsibilities include overseeing wing plans, scheduling and documentation, the maintenance operations center, the maintenance supply liaison and the analysis section. She is also responsible, through the commander, for monitoring the health of the aircraft fleet.

"I think future CGOs will learn from it," said Captain Less. "It's a great opportunity to get direct leader mentorship from the wing commander and for you to sit down with the senior leader and have him mentor you and answer questions. I am glad my group put me forward to do it."
