Stay safe this holiday season Published Dec. 14, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Calvin Grade 325th Fighter Wing Safety TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Christmas holiday season is one of the most anticipated time of the year for many people. It would be an awful time to let a senseless mishap alter this otherwise joyous occasion. During the holiday break, many people decide to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation. This is the time when people are most vulnerable. Many people are still firm believers that mishaps only happen to the other guy. The 325th Fighter Wing safety office would like to take this opportunity to remind those folks that, to everyone around you; you are the other guy. When heading into this holiday season, please don't forget to stay cognizant of the following items: Remember to check all Christmas tree lights even new ones because the tree could become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections. Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. Plug all outdoor electric decorations into a weather proof outlet box to avoid potential shocks and to hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples. Avoid using nails or tacks and never pull or tug your lights to remove them. When driving with reduced visibility or rough road conditions, always reduce driving speed. Depending on the severity of conditions consider doubling or even tripling the normal distance between cars. Numerous studies have highlighted the fact that drowsy driving is just as bad as drunk driving so be well rested before getting behind the wheel. There are no excuses for driving under the influence of alcohol this holiday season. Being a smart party host or guest should include being sensible about alcoholic drinks. Whether hosting or attending holiday parties, the most important thing to do is have a plan. If the plans fall through there are numerous resourses out there to get a holiday guest home safely. An excellent resource would be the Airmen against Drunk Driving program. They are on call and can be reached at (850) 867-0220. And last but not least, wear a seatbelt. That's the most valuable gift to give loved ones this Christmas. On behalf of the 325th Wing Safety Office, have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
