A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday for the grand opening of the new dormitory complex, marking a series of improvements for Airmen at Tyndall Air Force Base.

The 120-person dormitory campus, on which construction began September 2007, was completed in late December 2008.

"These facilities would have not been possible without the dedicated work of the Army Corp of Engineers, our partners at Caddell Constructions Inc., planners, dorm management personnel and Major Command staffs," said Brig. Gen. Darryl Roberson, 325th Fighter Wing commander. "They were constructed to the 'Dorms-4-Airmen,' standard adopted by the Air Force in recent years."

The "Dorms-4-Airmen" concept is a design providing a four-person module with four private bedrooms, private baths, a shared kitchen with washers and dryer and a common living room.

"The design promotes increased privacy and social interaction, while creating an environment for mentoring and building bonds between wingmen," said the base commander.

Consisting of three buildings and an administration facility, the dormitory is built north of Mississippi Avenue on Georgia Avenue.

"The Airmen who have been recently residing in the dorms known as the 'Quads', which are mostly Maintenance Airmen, have been moved into the new dorms," said Master Sgt. Anthony Jones, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron dorm manager. "The 'Quads' are currently being renovated and is scheduled to be complete by November."

"Although we have built many buildings on this base over the years, these facilities are the first of a kind and will be a cornerstone to Team Tyndall's commitment to improving the quality of life for our Airmen," said General Roberson.
