Final Denial Barrier project

Vehicle Final Denial Barriers will be installed over the next several months in efforts to further secure Tyndall Air Force Base from unauthorized entry.

The barriers help stop both those who attempt to enter the installation without authorization, those who are lost, confused, or inattentive; and those who attempt to "run the gate."

There will be a significant amount of construction around the support-side base gates.

The location of the barriers was determined using all safety and security criteria ensuring the utmost protection for Team Tyndall. The activation sequence incorporates a series of traffic control signals intended to alert motorists of impending barrier deployment and allows motorists time to safely avoid it. These signals will also allow authorized motorists approaching the barrier from the other direction time to either pass or safely stop prior to it. As part of the barrier system there will also be short decorative walls or a series of cables on each side of the roadway to ensure avoidance is not possible.

This project requires construction at each of the gates that will impact both inbound and outbound traffic. Every effort will be made to minimize traffic delays during the construction process.

Construction began with Sabre Gate Jan. 26. Sabre Gate will close to inbound traffic for seven weeks to allow construction to be completed. During these seven weeks, School Rd (next to Tyndall Elementary School) will become the detour route for inbound Sabre Gate traffic and driving routes should be adjusted to accommodate the gate closure schedule and alternate traffic routes. Illinois Gate inbound and outbound lanes will remain open during this first phase of construction so that will also be an option for entry and exit from the base.

Further information will be provided as changes occur. For more information, call 283-8487 or 283-4397. If you have any questions on the barrier systems or reason for installation please contact the Wing Anti-Terrorism Office at 283-4615 or 283-2662.
