Senior officials of the Department of the Air Force and Balfour Beatty Communities unveiled their new community center for Air Force service members and their families at Tyndall Air Force Base during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 7.

"The community center further fosters a sense of community in family housing," said Teri Henry, Balfour Beatty Community manager. "It is a place where military families can gather, talk and have fun."

The new community center features an activities room, fitness center, business center, large playground, swimming pool, beach sand volleyball courts, large picnic gazebo area and basketball court.

Located at 4700 Sentry Lane in Wood Manor Housing, the community center is intended for military members and their families who reside in housing.

"It (community center) provides an additional sense of comfort to base housing," said Capt. Loc Nguyen, 325th Air Control Squadron instructor air battle manager and new to Tyndall base housing." "It's close by if we need anything or if we just feel like hanging out."

Balfour Beatty Communities will host resident events such as block parties, bingo nights and scrap booking events. Also, the center can be used for residents' own events.

Currently, the hours of operations are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"Tyndall has partnered with Balfour Beatty Communities and their team of professionals to improve the quality of life of our servicemembers," said Mrs. Henry.

The plan for family housing revitalization at Tyndall began in February 2007. In addition to the community center, the following will be completed within the first four years of the plan: 281 existing homes will be demolished, 306 new homes will be constructed and eight playgrounds will be installed.
