Tyndall Air Force Base broke ground for a new state-of-the-art, energy-efficient fitness center complex 9 a.m. today here.

The new 'Fit to Fight' facility, which is slated for completion in 2010, will feature a variety top-quality exercise machines and spacious work-out areas.

"We will soon replace the current fitness center with a modern 75,000 square-foot fitness center capable of supporting the 'Fit to Fight' ethos now ingrained in the culture of our Air Force," said Brig. Gen. Darryl Roberson, 325th Fighter Wing commander.

The Tyndall Fitness Center is a dedicated "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" showcase project. Upon completion, the new Fitness Center will achieve 'gold' LEED certification, which sets high standards in five categories of facility development: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

"This building will be a spectacle of beauty, functionality, and energy efficiency," said Ann Garner, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron chief of engineering. "This building will serve to educate the base population on the importance of energy conservation and sustainable development."

The groundbreaking ceremony featured opening remarks from the 325th Fighter Wing commander, recognition of the key personnel involved in the facilities development and an official breaking-ground ceremony.
