Tyndall Air Force Base took big steps in becoming a more tobacco free environment when the 325th Medical Group became one of the newest Air Force medical campuses to go tobacco free during their unveiling ceremony Nov. 20.

Tobacco use on the 325th MDG grounds conflicts with its role as Team Tyndall's disease-prevention champions and promoters of a healthy lifestyle said Col. Gino Auteri, 325th MDG commander.

"Take in a deep breath of air," said Colonel Auteri referring to a healthier environment at the Medical Group.

All designated smoking areas around the 325th MDG are now deactivated. The MDG campus includes: Bldg. 546b, 1404, 1305, 1307, 1467, 1468, 1471, 1473, 1466, 950 and all adjacent parking lots, ramps, sidewalks and entry ways. Signs are posted throughout the campus as reminders of the new policy.

"We hope the tobacco-free idea becomes contagious and we look forward to it spreading," said Lt. Col. Gianna Zeh, 325th MDG chief of medical staff.

In conjunction with the Medical Groups new approach, Tyndall also participated in the national 33rd annual Great American Smokeout.

Traditionally taking place on the third Thursday of November, the GASO inspires and encourages smokers to quit smoking for one day.
