Boot Camp at Tyndall

Tyndall Airmen unable to meet fitness standards, or those who wish to participate in a high-caliber fitness routine, are now able to attend Boot Camp, a program offered through the Health and Wellness Center here.

"The HAWC Fitness Boot Camp program provides unit commanders with a proven path to success for individuals who have not met fitness standards or are at risk of failure on their fitness assessment," said Mr. Robert Pagenkopf, HAWC Fitness Program manager.

The boot camp, which is offered twice each duty day from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and again from 2 to 3:30 p.m., is managed by the base Fitness Program manager and is lead by three volunteer physical training leaders.

"All members entered into Boot Camp remain in the program until they achieve a pass-rate of 75 or above," said Mr. Pagenkopf. "However, once they're able to pass, they can continue with the program as long as they want.

"There are a number of individuals who participate simply for a more structured, dynamic workout," he said.

The program's name, Boot Camp, suits the extensiveness of the workout sessions.

After roll call, members are divided up into groups. The session begins with a five to 10 minute warm-up and then, based on the group's ability and medical limitations, the group moves into a 45-minute cardiovascular exercise. During cardio, members endure interval training, circuit training, sprint and agility training and cross-training workouts. The intensity of the exercise is based off the individual's target heart rate zone and rate of perceived exertion.

After cardio is completed, members move onto a strength and endurance workout that last 20 to 30 minutes. During strength training, members utilize free weights, machines, resistance bands, body bars and calisthenics. These exercises consist of upper, lower and core body focus that alternates from week to week. Finally, members cool down with five to 10 minute flexibility exercises.

"With commander and unit support, this program will help Team Tyndall make immediate progress towards our goal of being number one in Air Education and Training Command for fitness readiness," said Mr. Pagenkopf.
