Kicking off a Smart Start Published Oct. 6, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Vesta M. Anderson 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Tyndall Youth Center kicked off Smart Start Football at 5 p.m. Monday at the Youth Center Baseball Field 1. "Smart Start programs were created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports to help kids get ready for sports and succeed in life," said Mr. Andy Wallace, Tyndall Youth Center Sports and Fitness director. The Smart Start Program was developed by top motor skill development specialists in the youth sports field. Parent-child groups perform motor skill tasks, which gradually builds confidence in children while having fun at the same time. According to the Youth Center, the program covers five different sports: baseball, basketball, soccer, golf and football. A different program is offered each month as part of the Tyndall Youth Sports and Fitness program. "Smart Start Football teaches children, ages three to seven, the basic motor skills necessary to play organized flag football while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. "The program focuses on teaching children and parents skills in throwing, catching, kicking, punting, running and agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt," said Wallace. The class costs 45 dollars and all participants receive a shirt and participant manuals. The group will meet Mondays at the Youth Center's Baseball Field 1.
