Tyndall adding new homes

Twenty-eight Tyndall Air Force Base families have recently moved into brand new housing units at Redfish Extension.

Most Tyndall AFB military family housing units were at least 35-years old, but with privatized base housing, the base is able to replace or renovate existing homes.

"Construction of 246 new homes and a community center with recreational facilities will continue through December 2009," said Constance Tway, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron contract project manager.

By project's end, Tyndall will have a total of 813 homes - some new and some renovated. There are also many homes still scheduled to go through the demolition process; Sentry Lane houses are the current objective.

All of the completed new homes are for members in the ranks E-1 to E-6. Residents are asked to sign a one-year lease, but accommodations can be made on a case-by-case basis.

One of the newest residents at Redfish Extension is pleased with his new home.

"We really like the fact the houses are built with all of the latest Energy Star appliance and light fixtures," said Airman 1st Class Korey Barber, 325th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, and former Wood Manor resident. "Our closets are as big as our kitchen in our old house."

Rent is equal to the servicemembers basic housing allowance. Currently, utility costs are included in the rent, so housing is less expensive than renting downtown in a comparable rental.

"The best part is that when a member is deployed, the spouse and children can remain in their home," said the project manager said. "This means that personnel can deploy knowing their families live in safe, affordable housing."

For all intents and purposes, Balfour Beatty Communities, formerly known as Gary Michael Holloway Military Housing, is considered the "landlord" for all housing units at Tyndall AFB. As such, BBC officials are responsible for day-to-day operations and housing maintenance.

"We (BBC) offer additional services - cutting the lawns and throwing community parties for special occasions," said Mary Ann Barbieri, BBC housing management specialist. "We are about close attention to detail, focus on customer service and the priority to the military member and their families."
