Tyndall celebrates 'Wing Safety Day' Published May 29, 2007 By Airman First Class Anthony J. Hyatt 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Summer time is right around the corner, which means it's time for outdoor fun. For many reasons, summer months tend to be a period when off-duty mishaps increases. The 325th Fighter Wing hosted Safety Day 2007 Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Park. "The idea is to get safety on the troops' minds," said Master Sgt. Edward Best, 325th Fighter Wing safety monitor. "Operation Summer-Survivor, Zero in on Safety" is the theme of this event. "It is important to have this day because summer is approaching and many people will be participating in more outdoor and water activities," said Staff Sgt. Samantha Whitfield, 325th Mission Support Squadron safety monitor. "Many outdoor activities require extra precautions and can potentially be harmful if the proper safety measures are not taken," said Sergeant Whitfield. "Team Tyndall and their families were all invited," said Sergeant Best. Safety Day emphasized "family fun" this year. "We want to put emphasis on kids with activities such as canoe rides, a bouncy castle, and fishing and by hosting an expert who can address child restraints for vehicles," said Sergeant Best. Safety Day helped bring people together. "Wing Safety day is an opportunity for everyone to regroup and concentrate on taking proper safety measures in their daily activities," said Sergeant Whitfield. Many events where scheduled throughout the day. The most important events were briefs for Airmen addressing summer safety. Each squadron conducted in-house briefings related to mishap prevention in the morning. The in-house briefings included organizational topics and summer safety topics with an emphasis on traffic safety. Softball games between Airmen and officers were also played during the Safety Day event. The games fostered morale for Tyndall Airmen and ushered in summer activities. Games included the "Airmen versus Lieutenants" game and the "Chiefs versus Eagles" game. Display booths were stationed throughout Heritage Park. A booth for the Red Cross, the Bay County Sheriff Police department, Airmen against Drunk Driving and many others were there to highlight the importance of being safe this summer. The Safety Day events also included the Firefighter's Challenge. A team of four Airmen from the 2nd Fighter Squadron, the 325th Communications Squadron and the 325th Medical Group competed against each other. The squadrons competed in the bunker-hydrant, the bucket brigade, the rescue maze and the barrel competition. "It is very important that we have we have this day because it is very easy for people to become complacent, which can lead to terrible accidents," said Sergeant Whitfield. Safety Day was filled with fun activities, but the main purpose was to instill safety in the minds' of every Airman. Summer can be a great, but dangerous time, so be sure to take all precautions while participating in outdoor activities.
