Anthrax vaccine becoming mandatory Published March 13, 2007 By Airman Glenn Moore 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Department of Defense issued a new policy memo Oct. 12 requiring mandatory Anthrax vaccinations for individuals in selected high-threat areas or special mission units. The clinic here is already administering the vaccine to those who wish to get it. Although it is voluntary now, it will become mandatory for anyone deploying to Central Command or the Korean Peninsula as of March 19. After this date anyone deploying must have at least one Anthrax vaccination, but Airman are encouraged to go now and get it. "We have plenty of stock on hand, and if anyone has questions they are welcome to call public health. The immunizations techs are standing by to educate anyone who is interested in learning more about the vaccine," said Capt. Karen Kramer, 325th Medical Group public health flight commander. Headquarters Air Force sent out an implementation message in February to the major commands, directing them to implement the program, in accordance with current DOD and Air Force guidance. The implementation of this program is in the initial stages, and the Air Force has established a four-week time frame. That begins with unit notification; units must ensure Airmen meet the requirement for mandatory vaccinations.
