Tigers sweep Bandits in weekend match-up

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --  The Tyndall Tigers men's varsity basketball team won both games against the visiting Bandits from Ft. Benning, Ga., in Southeastern Military Athletic Conference action Saturday and Sunday.

In Saturday's game, Tyndall took down Ft Benning, 86-68. The Tigers hit the hardwood running kicking into high gear from the outset as they raced to a 43-28 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, Tyndall led by as many as 25 points, despite substituting liberally, and coasted to victory.

Tigers Melvin Smith and Anthony Showers tied for game scoring honors with 20 points each, followed by Jared Austin, 11, and Marqus Armour and Markus Manuel, 10 points each. Manuel led in rebounding, and Smith led in both assists and steals with six and five, respectively. William Timothy led Ft. Benning in scoring with 14 points.

Sunday, Tyndall again beat Ft. Benning, 90-72, The Tigers once again took an early lead.They had no problem adapting to the defensive change that Ft. Benning made from the first game, switching from playing man-to-man to a zone. Tyndall ripped the nets to take a 49-34 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Tigers, as in the previous game, were able to substitute freely and maintained a double digit lead throughout to take the victory.

Armour paced a balanced Tigers scoring attack with 20 points followed by Showers, 16, Smith and Ryan Cunningham, 13 points each, and Manuel with 12 points. Showers led in both rebounding and assists with 10 and six respectively. Timothy led the Bandits in scoring with a game high 24 points. The Tigers are idle this weekend, but will host their arch rival - the Eagles of Eglin AFB, Fla., next.
