Ride to arrive: motorcycle safety Published Feb. 17, 2016 By 325th Fighter Wing Safety office TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Recently there has been an increase in motorcycle accidents and reportable injuries related to motorcycle accidents on Tyndall. Safety Investigations have shown violating speed limits and a loss of situational awareness are two of the key factors in our most recent mishaps. These are attitudinal factors that can be changed and corrected. We must take these incidents very seriously. Last fiscal year there were 15 motorcycle fatalities across the Air Force. Motorcycle riders make up only 10-15 percent of the Air Force active duty population but account for nearly 50 percent of the vehicle related fatalities. There have been five motorcycle related fatalities across the Air Force since Oct. 1. Additionally, there has been a rise in motorcycle accidents throughout the Air Force. Air Combat Command has seen an increase of motorcycle accidents recently and in response is funding four traffic-safety events this year at each wing. These events include the "Arrive Alive Tour" and the "Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving Course." At the local level Tyndall will also be putting together a rider safety event. The 325th Fighter Wing Safety Office will be hosting a motorcycle safety event to show off some new creative safety solutions. The idea is to get out ahead of mishaps and prevent them from ever happening. What we are doing in the world of motorcycle safety is good, but as a wing, we think we can add to that with new gear, phone apps and creative solutions. These steps combined with outreach from "rider mentors" for newer riders will help to change the rider culture and keep our Airmen safe.
