AFRC hosts financial fair Published Feb. 17, 2016 By Senior Airman Dustin Mullen 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center here is hosting a financial information fair Feb. 22-26. The fair, called Military Saves Week, will have several events aimed at helping Airmen and their families manage, save, invest and balance their income. "Military Saves Week is a great opportunity to help service members and their families in our community set a goal, make a plan and save automatically," said Carlie Carr, AFRC community readiness consultant. "The focus areas of Military Saves are saving for an emergency, paying off high cost debt, buying a home, contributing to Thrift Savings Plan or a 401k retirement account, and saving through the Department of Defense Savings Deposit Program when deployed." The events include: Understanding Your Credit Report and Score - Introduction to understanding the credit report, score and reviewing/repairing the report. Extreme Couponing - The basics of couponing using websites, newspapers and friends. The workshop will emphasize strategies for saving and couponing during the spring and summer seasons. Home Buying Basics - Learn the key elements needed to select the right home and financing for you. Discussion of mortgage options including Veteran Affairs backed mortgage. Additionally, foreclosure and short sale will be discussed. Smart Investing Workshop - Discussion of basic investment options including TSP and civilian equivalent 401K. "By attending the financial briefings Airmen can gain better understanding of their financial situation and understand the importance of establishing a budget for the future," Carr said. Military Saves, a component of America Saves and a partner in the Department of Defense's Financial Readiness Campaign, is a nonprofit campaign that seeks to motivate, support and encourage military families to save money, reduce debt and build wealth, Carr added.
