Summer safety is a must

The Memorial Day weekend is the official kick-off of the Defense Department's Critical Days of Summer campaign, which will conclude Labor Day.

"Summer is a welcomed season of respite, renewal, and a busy travel time in the United States and around the world," said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. "It is also a time when we all must exercise extra caution. Last year, the Defense Department lost 83 service members to motor vehicle and sports and recreation accidents from Memorial Day to Labor Day."

Here at Tyndall, we had zero fatalities and the 325th Fighter Wing safety office hopes to keep it that way this year as well. They already have a plan in place to ensure success.

"We are disseminating information through all Unit Safety Representatives and expanding our base motorcycle training program dramatically," said Technical Sgt. Jared Stonecipher, 325th Fighter Wing NCO in charge of ground safety. "Motorcycles and motor vehicles are the main cause of fatalities in the Air Force. Motorcycle riders make up less than 15 percent of the Air Force population, but also make up over 55 percent of the fatalities in the Air Force annually. The Pan Handle has the largest group of motorcycle riders with the least amount of fatalities in the nation and we plan to help keep that trend going with expanding training and awareness."

Even if you don't own a motorcycle you need to stay vigilant.

"Driving is statistically the most dangerous thing all Airman do every day, however many of us give little though to that undeniable truth and become complacent with our day-to-day routine," said Stonecipher. "We all must make a stronger effort to remain focused while driving, especially during the summer travel season."

This year's theme is "Double Checks, No Second Thoughts," and is a reminder of the responsibility to be a good Wingman on and off-duty. This includes looking out for oneself, one's teammates and always being prepared to fly, fight and win.

"Before we begin the 'Critical Days of Summer,' military and civilian leaders across the Defense Department must reinforce the importance of safety and the need for good judgment to their teams," said Hagel. "Safety is about doing the right thing for the right reasons, from wearing seatbelts to making sure to never drink and then drive, to simply saying 'no' to risky situations."

While participating in summer activities with family and friends, use risk management. Plan for the unexpected and avoid unnecessary risks.

Stonecipher echoed his sentiment.

"Have fun; it is summer," he concluded. "But, please do it safely."
