Tyndall takes recycling to the next level

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded Tyndall the Recycling Recognition Program Award.

Each year the Florida DEP gives the award to organizations that recycle 40 percent or more of the over waste. During 2013 Tyndall's recycling rate was 53 percent, said Edwin Wallace, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron pollution prevention program manager.

"I am very pleased that we won the award," said Wallace. "It lets everyone on base, who recycles, know that their efforts are not going un-noticed. Without the efforts of the employees at the Recycling Center, who are out every day regardless of weather, winning this award would not have happened. It is nice to see them get some recognition."

The mission of the DEP's Recycling Recognition Program is to create a greener future for Florida.

"The Recycling Recognition Program was developed to encourage private businesses, institutions, schools, public organizations and citizens to increase recycling in order to reach Florida's recycling goal of 75 percent by 2020," states the DEP's website.

There are steps to take to reach this goal.

"To continue this effort, Tyndall must continue to divert solid waste from the landfills by increasing the amount of material we recycle," said Wallace. "We need to get the word out about the base Recycling Program, and how it, not only benefits Tyndall, but it also benefits the surrounding community."
