A Tyndall Chapel won the Small Chapel award for 2013 for strengthening the program and outreach of the base chapel.

The Chapel here received the Robert P. Taylor Award at the Air Combat Command level and will go on to compete at the Air Force level.

"It's about total force fitness," said Maj. Tim Rosenthal, 325th Fighter Wing chaplain. "There are many components of that: mental, physical and spiritual. We are here so Airmen are emotionally and spiritually prepared for war and high operations tempo. This includes marriage programs, enrichment programs and confidential counseling for any faith group."

Chaplains, volunteers, and pastors at Tyndall are credited with stabilizing 39 crises, providing 36 suicide intervention briefs and restoring 686 Airmen to active duty. The Chapel has also led 80 pre-deployment and reintegration briefs and seen an increase in people attending services and events.

"In the past people came for the program, but now we are making a pivot to push the ministry outward, Rosenthal said. "Our main business is unit focus. On average we reach out and try to help 2000 people a week. And we've done all this at 33 percent manning for the last 6 months."

Rosenthal's sentiment was reiterated by others.

"One hundred fifty volunteers are doing 11,000 hours at various organizations and groups," said Master Sgt. Joanne Burgess, 325th superintendent of chapel operations. "Our volunteers are very dedicated, very committed and want to make a difference," "Programs like vacation bible school, occurring Monday through Friday, as well as counseling for couples."

After the chapel receives the award they will submit a packet to compete for the Small Chapel of the Air Force.
