TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Tyndall Elementary School students were presented Hurricane Preparedness Poster Contest awards by the Mission Support Group commander, May 2.
Colonel Ronald Pieri, 325th MSG commander, awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the Hurricane Preparedness Poster Contest with ribbons for making homemade posters. The contest was a measure of how creative kids could be while warning others of the dangers hurricane season bring.
“This was the eighth year we ran the contest,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Teresak, 325th Civil Engineering Squadron readiness and management NCO in charge of training. “We hold the contest every year to teach the kids, without scaring them, of the dangers that natural disasters may bring. It really gets the kids energized to learn.”
Out of the 20 entrees from the 4th and 5th grade classes of Tyndall Elementary, the winners were:
-
1st Place-Kelolri Young, 5th grade
-
2nd Place-Leah Satatsis, 4th grade
-
3rd Place-Riley Mulhollan, 5th grade
The contest is part of the Air Force’s “Be Ready Program,” a community outreach program aimed at informing and educating people on the importance of readiness and knowing how to respond to disasters. A big part of this initiative is making sure children understand how to take care of themselves in case of explosions, hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses that accompany these disasters.
