TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Tyndall library is scheduled to begin the 2016 summer reading program June 23.
This year's theme is “Read for the Win!” and celebrates all types of sports: Olympics, football, gymnastics, outdoor games and more.
The six-week program is designed for age groups from 6 months through high school, and is aimed at generating excitement for reading.
“In general, summer reading programs are an excellent vehicle for students to avoid losing what they learned throughout the school year,” said Liana Vargas, 325th Force Support Squadron library technician. “Young readers can maintain their reading proficiency and practice their reading skills acquired during the school year, all within a fun and relaxed framework that doesn't feel like work.”
Last year's summer reading program at Tyndall was a success, with more than 500 children participating. The library staff hope to have a similar turnout this year.
The program features a contest that tracks how long each participant reads each night.
Readers can register online at the library Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/tyndalllibrary. There is a posting that contains separate links for each of the following age groups: 0-6 years, 7-11 years and teenagers. Once registered, readers can log the number of minutes they read on the website.
Each Thursday, the Library will host a special story time for younger readers, along with guest presenters and a craft. There will also be a "weekly challenge" sheet each week; every time a reader returns with a completed challenge sheet, he or she will receive a small prize, as well as have their name entered into the drawing for the grand prize: a brand-new Kindle Fire tablet.
The program concludes with the Grand Finale on July 28, when the grand-prize winner will be chosen.
