More than 150 Team Tyndall members attended the Professionalism: Enhancing Human Capital course here Sept. 28.

Implemented by the Profession of Arms Center of Excellence, the Enhancing Human Capital course is centered on enhancing leadership through professionalism and personal interactions.

“The course is unlike any other leadership course I have experienced from the Air Force,” said Lt. Col. George Sanderlin, the course’s instructor. “It focuses on the human side of leadership. Leadership is primarily about people-to-people interactions. If we enhance our ability to communicate and interact with other people, we will be better leaders.”

The four-hour course is designed to help the audience understand the importance of sincere human interaction while learning to lead oneself.

“The main point is to be a better leader by being a better human,” said Senior Airman Kelli Alvarez, 325th Logistics Readiness Squadron materiel management specialist, who attended the course. “It was really interesting. It’s definitely not something to apply to just one aspect of life. I can see myself using this information in personal relationships.”

The course also identifies pitfalls associated with leadership, such as bias mindsets, and teaches ways to overcome and adapt to the challenges of leadership.

“I believe the greatest threat to being a great leader happens when we think there is nothing else anyone can teach us,” Sanderlin said. “If we focus on having a growth mindset, we will always look for ways to improve as leaders, even at times where we may fail along the way.”

The course has been taught to more than 50,000 people in various forms for almost two years, according to Sanderlin.

The Profession of Arms Center of Excellence was activated in March 2015, by former Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Mark A. Welsh III to ‘Develop Air Force personnel with a professionalism mindset, character, and core values required to succeed today and well into the future.’
