Inspector General complaint program Published Feb. 4, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Alex Echols 325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- What happens when a person becomes aware of wrong doings or anything that violates a law, regulation, instruction, policy, or procedure? Where could that person turn to when they feel they cannot go anywhere else? The 325th Fighter Wing Inspector General's office is an unbiased, independent agency that is a direct advocate for the Air Force. Its mission is to ensure the base runs efficiently and effectively, as well as monitor the moral and welfare of its populace. "Our job is to be the eyes and ears of the wing commander," said Lt. Col. James Akers, 325th Fighter Wing inspector general. There are two sides to the IG office: inspection and complaint resolution. Each side plays a significant role in fulfilling the IG's mission. This article will deal primarily with the complaint resolution program. This program makes it possible for anyone who believes they are being wronged or sees a violation to come forth without fear of reprisal to get an impartial group to view their issue objectively. "In essence, we are like quality assurance," said Tech. Sgt. Shane Rhoades, 325th FW/IG complaints and resolution director. "We make sure that people are doing their jobs according to Air Force Instructions and policies. We want people to work at 100 percent. When they have problems in their work areas or personal problems, they are not working at 100 percent. We want to help that along." Before coming forth with a complaint, it is encouraged for complainants to use their chain of command. Doing this can resolve most issues. "To accomplish the Air Force mission effectively, open communication with your command is really important," said Rhoades. "Most issues can be handled at the lowest level, which is encouraged." If this does not remedy the issue, or a person just simply does not feel comfortable going through their chain of command, they should gather information on the issue. This will help the IG better help the individual. "We generally see many people that have questions, issues or problems that don't know where else to turn to," said Akers. "We may not always fix their problems, but we can direct them to the proper agency or channel to go through." It is imperative for a person who witnesses wrong doing or violations of the law, regulation, instruction, policy or procedures to come forward and bring that situation to light. Any issue discussed between a complainant and a member of the IG staff is considered to be protected communication. "With all the budget cuts, we need to utilize Air Force resources efficiently," said Rhoades. "Fraud, waste and abuse is everybody's responsibility."
